Going by a story telling will help us get meaning out of this article, and permit me to use a foreign story though I am an African.
Agnes de Mille as a choreographer just achieved a tremendous success of her carrier, but as you are reading this article, the major problem she is facing is confusion.
As a dancer and a choreographer earlier in her days, she created choreography for ballet called THE THREE VIRGINS AND A DEVIL. Thinking this is going to be one of her nice work but to her greatest surprise, nobody made meaning out of it.
Then RODEO was created again after few years, also having the same thought that the work is going to make fame, behold, it resulted only to a little commercial fame.
She stepped down to the year 1943 which led to the choreography of OKLAHOMA! This was a musical show from Rodgers and Hammerstein which enjoyed nearly instant success.
The coming years even saw incredible successes where the Oklahoma film version won an Academy award and this show would run for incredible performances of about 2,212, both within the shore of America and abroad.
And do you know the funny thing here, the performance she had from Oklahoma confused her, reason being that, she thought that her work on Oklahoma was average to be compared with what she has been putting out in other none-successful work.
Hear her statement as she was busy killing herself with the worst enemy which is self-comparison, she said and I quote: “After the opening of Oklahoma!, I suddenly had unexpected, flamboyant success for a work I thought was only fairly good, after years of neglect for work I thought was fine. I was bewildered and worried that my entire scale of values was untrustworthy.”
But, after meeting Graham who had not much success to be compared with her, you can imagine what Graham told her. Graham said and I quote:
Graham responded by saying,
“There is vitality, a life force, energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique.
And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.”
Now, let us examine the “uselessness involved in judging yourself”
For over a decade now, I have been a blogger, web programmer and a writer publishing many articles almost every day. And since this career and or talent innovation blog started, I have been on the verge of giving my faithful subscribers two articles every week for the time being now.
And, to tell you the truth, I have been a little bit in the shoe of Mille because, some days, the words just flow easily as I did not expect and some days, it was hard to chip-out words to make a concrete reasoning.
Some days, I would think that I did given out a good article, only to see that people are not even buying the idea, while on hoping that some articles do not make meaning behold, such article always make the best out of the month. I came to realize that, we are often terrible judges of our own work then why?
The reason being that, not only are you a bad judge of your own self, it is not your responsibility to judge the work you put out there. You only have to create. Remember, not even your place to compare it with others, no! Do not kill yourself trying to figure out how valuable it can be or how responsible it will be to out-lookers.
Look! It is not on your job list to tell yourself.
Know this from this moment including I writing to you now, your job is, share whatever it is you have right now from where ever you are coming from.
Enlightening us small with the word of Buddhist teacher called Pema Chodron “your job is to “come as you are.”
Do not let your self-judgment keep you from doing things as it is coming out from you, remember, professionals produce even when it seems difficult.
HOW CAN WE KEEP OUR EYES ON OUR PAPER?
Remembering the old days when men were still in primary schools, our teacher would come closer during the examination and keep telling every one of us to keep our eyes on our paper as a way of instructing us to avoid examination malpractice and face our own work.
Little did she know the in-depth philosophy coming out of this statement? Of course, this is your race to run, you have to keep your eyes out of another work and run your race alone because, you are writing for yourself and self-promotion and whatever comes out of your inner-knowledge is what matters. It does not have to be another person and the judgment they are passing over you. It must have to be you and your paper.
The same thing can be said on your daily work. Every morning you wake up and put down whatever you will like to do for the day. No matter what it is, you have to put your head up and put down your list right!
Well, if what you put down does not meet any body and his or her expectations---men! This is never your concern. Remember, the way someone sees what you do is based on their experiences and I bet you cannot change that.
If your choices do not match their predictions and feelings of expectations, I tell you the truth, such is not problem of yours.
Your responsibility is to do the work not to judge it. Make it a habit to fall in love with the process involved, please, never grade the out-come. It is a critical mistake. And finally, KEEP YOUR EYES ON YOUR OWN PAPER as my primary school teacher does say those days.
See you next time!
